2018 marked the second year of the UPEI track and field program, the second year of Bailey Smith’s university career and her second AUS 60m championship victory.
Bailey Smith hails from Ten Mile House PEI and in 2017-18 she was a third year nursing student at UPEI. The nursing program is very demanding and Bailey was able to juggle school (including classroom work and many hours of clinical work), her track and field training, and competing in the very competitive AUS and USports track and field competitions. Bailey dealt with some injuries to complete the challenge of a very difficult year.
Bailey’s 2018 season began with solid 60m performances of 7.89 in Moncton and 7.84 in Oromocto. At the AUS championships in Moncton in February Bailey ran 7.82 in the heats and had a great 7.63 personal best, gold medal performance in the final. For her performance, Bailey was named AUS Track Athlete of the Year at the championships.
At the Usports championships in Windsor, Bailey overcame a misstep early in the heats to qualify for the final in a personal best tying 7.63. Bailey came 7th in the final in 7.68 to cap off a remarkable season.
After a new personal best and provincial record of 7.48 in the 60 m at the SMU Open last weekend, Bailey is currently ranked second in Usports.
Good luck to Bailey at the Sport PEI Awards ceremony which will be held on February 26th!
